The other day I was reading my Bible devotion and it was about God's lovingkindness character. This is not a word we use in our everyday conversations with one another. It is a word that describes a characteristic of God. It describes the kind of love that God has for us, as His children, as His creation. In reading different versions and interpretations of the Bible, the term is similar to unfailing love.
The word 'lovingkindness' also puts me in the mind of my dog. Dogs have an unfailing love for their humans. They love us at all times. They overlook our flaws and they love us anyway.
The definition of lovingkindness is "kindness or affectionate behavior resulting from or expressing love" from YourDictionary.com. God denotes lovingkindness as "the Divine Love condescending to His creatures, more especially to sinners in unmerited kindness" (biblestudytools.com). This word further relates to forgiveness and mercy.
Of course, we can't say our dog is God or compare him to God but our dogs have some similar characteristics of God, especially how our dogs loves us. They are loving, affectionate, and consistent, just like God. Our dogs accept us for who we are. We don't have to act a certain way or be at a certain status in order to be loved by them. They forgive us when we yell at them, when we are late to feed them or are late coming home and even when we punish them when they make a mess -like God. God loves us like this at a much deeper level but our dogs show us their love physically.
" I think dogs are the most amazing creatures, they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive." -Gilda Radner, comedian on the original cast of Saturday Night Live
